While we do not supply patients directly via the institutional channel, these activities are also of essential importance to us. On the one hand these activities can offer an entry to the market for direct supplies, on the other they allow us to build purchasing power for our pharmacies and the direct channel.

In the Netherlands, we have built up strong positions supplying pharmaceuticals (OPG Distrimed) and medical disposables (Medeco) to hospitals and nursing homes.

OPG Distrimed supplies medications to hospitals. Where OPG Distrimed uses OPG Groothandel’s purchasing and logistics services, the market approach focuses specifically on specialised care by the hospital pharmacy. OPG Distrimed offers services that support day-to-day operations and complete solutions, for example for inventory management and medication security. With our accumulated specialised knowledge of hospital pharmacies and experience in community pharmacies, we are entering into alliances to work with out-patient pharmacies in various ways.

Medeco supplies a wide range of incontinence and wound treatment products and intensive-care disposables, and is increasingly doing so under own brands. Product sales are linked to supporting inventory management, cost control and product training courses. Medeco not only delivers to hospitals and nursing homes but also to pharmacies, often through the wholesaling channel. Medeco is also active in Belgium.

In Denmark, Mediq Danmark delivers medical supplies in home healthcare settings (‘direct’), as well as a wide range of medical supplies to care homes and hospitals.

In Norway, Mediq Norge offers a similar range of products and services as Medeco Netherlands. In 2008, the market position was strengthened further by the acquisition of Medrek, which is active in the same market.

In May 2010 Mediq acquired Oriola-KDs Healthcare Trade activities and is now also represented in Sweden (Mediq Sverige and Meteko), Finland, EstoniaLatvia and Lithuania.

In Switzerland, we are active with Mediq Suisse, which sells incontinence products to nursing and care homes under the Absorin brand name.
