• Mediq moves to striking new building alongside A2

Today Mediq moves into a striking new head office alongside the A2 highway, Leidsche Rijn in Utrecht. The glass building has an open, modern look and is easy to reach. Following the relocation, Mediq forms part of the Health Boulevard Utrecht, which will also accommodate the new St. Antonius Hospital.

In 2005, Mediq requested ING to develop business premises for leasing purposes. In 2004, all of Mediq’s distribution centres in the Netherlands had been closed, including the one at the Europalaan, and were replaced by two new centres in Oss and Staphorst. As a result, Mediq was only using one third of the location available on Europalaan, Mediq’s head office since 1964. The building had also become out of date and Mediq was prevented from making any new investments due to changes in zoning plans. Mediq and the city of Utrecht then began their joint search for a new location, also in Utrecht, where Mediq has had its head office since 1899.

The new premises are a landmark of innovation. They were built using environmentally friendly materials and a state-of-the-art energy saving system. In the summer, so called aquifers pump water out of the ground to cool the air inside the building. This causes the water to heat up, which is then stored in the ground, without loss of temperature, and in turn is used to heat the building during the winter months. Blinds and shutters prevent the building becoming too warm. Mediq also made investments in ‘green’ IT. Mediq saves 60% in energy use compared with the data centre located in the previous building. The building also meets strict noise control standards and serves as a noise barrier for the Leidsche Rijn residential area.
