Princess Margriet attends official opening of Mediq’s head office

Today her Royal Highness Princess Margriet today attended the symposium on young people and diabetes in Mediq’s new head office. Mediq organized the symposium in connection with the official opening of the new building. The striking glass head office of Mediq, international supplier of pharmaceuticals and medical devices, is sited along the A2 motorway at Leidsche Rijn in Utrecht.

Mediq is helping a total of more than half a million diabetes patients in five countries. As a company engaged in healthcare, Mediq is conscious of its role and responsibilities in society and demonstrates this, for instance, in projects for young people with diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic affliction with far-reaching repercussions for young people’s lives. Every day, young people with diabetes have to measure their blood glucose levels and administer insulin. They have to remember to do so always and everywhere.

This is only the second relocation in Mediq’s 111-year Utrecht-based history. The striking building right beside the A2 motorway at Leidsche Rijn is highly innovative. It was built sustainably using environmentally friendly materials and a state-of-the-art energy saving system. In the summer, so called aquifers pump water out of the ground to cool the air inside the building. This causes the water to heat up, which is then stored in the ground, without loss of temperature, and in turn is used to heat the building during the winter months. Blinds and shutters prevent the building from becoming too warm. Mediq has also made investments in ‘green’ IT. Mediq saves 60% in energy use compared with the data centre located in the previous building. The building also meets strict noise control standards and serves as a noise barrier for the Leidsche Rijn residential area.

“We are proud that Princess Margriet attended the official opening of our new head office”, says Marc van Gelder, Mediq’s CEO. "We are also proud to be part of Utrecht’s Healthcare Boulevard. Construction of the St. Antonius Hospital has now also commenced. Our new building and the image it projects typify Mediq: innovation and transparency in a healthcare environment.”
