5 questions for ...

How did you end up with Mediq?
"After studying business economics, I worked for PriceWaterhouseCoopers for five years. This allowed me to familiarise myself with the many possibilities. I then consciously chose the business sector. I wanted more than just an external advisory role; I also wanted the responsibility of building up a company. I have worked for Mediq for fourteen enjoyable years now. I barely knew Mediq when I joined, but the opportunities it offered appealed to me. I managed to get off to a quick start at the Internal Audit department, working as a business unit controller at various business units and supporting acquisition processes, particularly abroad. I contributed to the integration of the acquisitions of three companies in Germany, which brought me to my previous position of CFO of Mediq in Germany. In the meantime my career is that of an expat: Now I am CFO of Byram Healthcare in the USA"
Can you explain a bit about what your positions entails?
"As the CFO, I hold the final responsibility for Finance, IT and Quality. I serve as the right hand of the CEO in the United States. I am involved in all of the company’s strategic decisions. For instance, when we go looking for suitable acquisition candidates. I support the integration and keep in intensive contact with the management of the acquired company. We make sure everyone feels at home at Mediq and enable them to contribute to our targets. Our philosophy revolves around leaving the merits of the acquired company intact. It is the local market expertise, in particular, that we mean to use in all countries."
What makes your work at Mediq interesting?
"The find the active role in the management team of an organisation to be extremely stimulating. As is making sure that your ideas are actually implemented. There is a very open atmosphere at Mediq. Exchanging knowledge is easy and job rotation is encouraged. Mediq as a whole is an enterprise with great potential for growth. The focus is on direct and retail concepts that centre on the patient. We have the means to invest. A lot is happening on the international level, which creates opportunities for us. For this reason, we need controllers who are not just experienced in their field, but who are also skilled in communication and flexible, in order to bridge cultural differences."
How have you been able to develop your professional and personal skills at Mediq so far?
"Our policy focuses on having the people in key positions within the Finance department switch positions within five years, but also on making sure that the succession is worthy. You are given the opportunity of spreading your wings within Mediq. As a controller, I developed more towards management, communication and corporate finance at the time. If you show that you are committed and you indicate what you want, then you will be given opportunities."
What is your personal career ambition?
"I get satisfaction out of contributing to the development of my colleagues. In addition, I want to keep working on the international level. We at Mediq have the international platform for our ideas. I made the transition from external accountancy, back in the day, in order to take a more constructive role in a company. At Mediq, I have never felt like I ran into a wall: you can realise your ambitions here!"
