Start of 'SMEER 'M' campaign for children with eczema in Zeeland province
Admiraal De Ruyter Hospital and Mediq Pharmacy are starting special meetings for children who suffer from eczema as well as for their parents. The 'SMEER 'M' (moisten it) sessions are meant to introduce these children to others who suffer the same problem and to exchange tips on how best to handle their eczema. The first session will start at the hospital in Goes on 19 September. Contact the hospital (eczeem@adrz.nl) or any of the Mediq pharmacies in Goes for registration.
Eczema is one of the most common skin diseases. The seriousness of the condition varies: about 1 in 5 young eczema patients suffer very serious eczema, which has a major impact on their quality of life. When the condition is serious, the itching can be unbearable.
SMEER 'M is the name of the multidisciplinary children's eczema centre, which was founded in 2011. The SMEER 'M meetings are informative group sessions for parents and their children, which link up to the individual consultations of the young patients. The intention is to enable the patients to continue the treatment of their eczema at home as efficiently as possible, based on the treatment plan drawn up by the dermatologist or paediatrician. The dermatologist or paediatrician will inform parents of the treatments using medication, lifestyle tips and the importance of proper moistening with emollients. At the same time, the children will share experiences and receive tips on how to deal with their condition.
Admiraal de Ruyter Hospital is the initiator and the first hospital to set up this programme specially for children and their parents, in close collaboration with Mediq pharmacies. Dermatologist Dr Galimont of Admiraal de Ruyter Hospital comments: "The SMEER 'M meetings are an example of close and effective cooperation between the care professionals involved. It is important that the treatment is continued properly at home, and that all involved care professionals support the care protocol." Paediatrician Dr Knockaert adds: "In the end, we want this care protocol to prove that we can reduce the use of pharmaceuticals and that we can contribute to the quality of life of both the children and their families."
In consultation with the dermatologist and the paediatrician, Mediq Pharmacy gives advice on how best to use pharmaceuticals and other skin care products, and also provides lifestyle recommendations. Serge van de Rijt, of the Goes-Zuid Mediq Pharmacy, explains: "Eczema patients have a very demanding type of skin. It isn't just about finding and giving them the right treatment for the skin, which can differ greatly from person to person; it's also about giving instructions and advice, so that patients suffer as little as possible from their eczema."
Mediq Pharmacy operates 227 pharmacies in the Netherlands. In Goes, Mediq has three pharmacies that are trained in accordance with the care protocol of the SMEER 'M multidisciplinary children's eczema centre.
